Upon completing his formal education in 1967, Barrie began a career in art and design; he created prototypes for toys. He also created original paintings which were immediately well received by art collectors. Later, he worked as a signalman on the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Light Railway in New Romney, England. His interest in locomotives continued and he even drove the Winston Churchill engine between 1968 and 1970.
