James Collender was born on January 19th, 1935 in Los Angeles, CA. He studied at Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, CA, and at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA. He served in the U.S. Army as a Combat Infantryman in the Korean War. His art career began as a design illustrator for several aircraft companies including Douglas Aircraft, Martin Marietta, and Ford Philco Aeronutronics. He was the artistic background director for the animated TV special The Night Before Christmas. In 2000, he decided to paint and sculpt full time and became a successful artist showing in galleries and collected by museums.
James
Collender was a prolific artist, but he also found time to participate in the community beyond his art studio. He was a life member of Boulder Elk's Club; a life member of the Longmont V.F.W; a founding member of The Hole-in-the-Wall Gang; and a member of the Roundup Riders of the Rockies. James passed away on February 9, 2011 at the age of 76, at his home in Broomfield, Colorado. He left a body of work that serves as a visual legacy to the Great American West.
