Karin Pfleger, German born American, born in 1953

Karin Pfleger is a self taught artist. A world traveler, Karin was inspired by a ceramic sculpture that she saw while perusing art galleries in Italy. Examining the semi-abstract modern sculpture, she imagined other shapes and textures. Karin turned to her husband and said “I know I can do this.”

Upon returning to her home in southern California, Karin visited the local college that offered art workshops. With full use of the art facility complete with a kiln, she began experimenting, inventing various techniques; she achieved a high level of artistic accomplishment within a short period of time. Karin’s unique style of molding and firing clay results in creations that skirt the edges of that which is representational.

Karin’s body of work consists of shapes and forms that are recognizable but are not simple reproductions of things. A soft floor length gown with lace that floats in the slightest breeze can be imagined in the hard baked clay, standing with layers of crumbly patterns, the garment shape slightly billowing to the left. A paper bag with its folds and crinkles, falling over to one side is re-imagined in the hard ceramic becomes a curious flower vase. The visual softness is an unusual deception to the sculpture’s hard surface.

Karin’s ceramic sculptures have been exhibited at the Civic Center in Irvine, California and at World Art Gallery in Ladera Ranch, California.
