Michael Parkes, American (1944 – )
American surrealist painter Michael Parkes was born in Missouri in 1944. He studied graphic art and painting at the University of Kansas. After his university studies he spent several years traveling throughout Europe and Asia, finally settling in Spain. His first body of work consisted chiefly of abstract expressionism, but after a spiritual journey through India his style of art changed, he began to paint images of people, finely detailed, living in worlds of Michael’s own imagination. Now Michael Parkes is an international phenomenon; one of the most well known and prolific surrealist painters in the world. His work has been the subject of a great number of art exhibitions, and has been widely praised in the media.
“As human beings, we limit our sense of perception to what is generally comfortable and present in everyday life. In limiting our perceptions to suit our individuality, we miss the vastness of other perceptions and the doors they represent. Though we have been conditioned to perceive nothing except our own world, this does not mean we cannot enter other realms.” Michael Parkes
