Wesley Nganjmirra was born in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia on May 23rd, 1961. He died in his homeland in 2007. He was a member of the Kunwinjku Aboriginal people. The Kunwinjku are a part of the Bininj Gun-Wok indigenous Australian peoples who live in the West Arnhem Land east of Darwin.
Wesley was born into a family of talented and well known artists including his father, Peter Nganjmirra, and his uncle, one of the foremost Aboriginal artists, Bobby Barrdjaray Nganjmirra. Wesley spent most of his early childhood in Oenpelli, an Aboriginal community in Arnhem Land. He and his brothers attended school in Oenpelli. Upon leaving school he embarked on a career in art. An accomplished painter, Wesley worked primarily in ochre pigments on archival paper. He is a listed as a prominent Aboriginal artist in the National Library of Australia.
His art often presents images from his ancestral religion known as The Dreamtime. Many Indigenous Australians refer to the Creation as The Dreamtime, a belief that all of creation was the work of cultural heroes who traveled across a formless land creating sacred sites.
